ONLINE EXHIBITION Sydney's home furnishing stores, 1890-1960
Until the 1960s, Sydney-siders usually 'went to town' to shop for furniture and furnishings for the home. There were dozens of specialist furnishing stores and department stores with furnishing sections in the city centre. Many were concentrated in 'furniture precincts', first along George Street and then from the 1920s around the city circle railway stations and the southern part of Pitt Street.
The decline of home furnishing shopping in central Sydney from the late 1950s was influenced by rising rents, lack of parking and a general population move to the suburbs. Shopping patterns also changed with the development of drive-in suburban shopping centres, the first opening at Top Ryde in November 1957.
A legacy of the city stores is their trade literature such as catalogues and associated ephemera: those used to illustrate this exhibtion are part of the Caroline Simpson Library and Research Collection (CSL&RC) at the Historic Houses Trust of NSW.
Written and researched by Michael Lech, Assistant Curator. August 2007.

TRUSTWORDS – SYDNEY WRITERS' FESTIVAL: THURSDAY
A co-presentation with Sydney Writers’ Festival, Trustwords is a vibrant and engaging talks program. 10am – 11am Public Sydney – Chair: Fenella Kernebone Public places are essential to a democratic society; yet they are often contested and marginalised. The authors of the new book Public Sydney: drawing the city will discuss in detail the physical form and meaning of our public places, from their origins, through sometimes remarkable changes, to their roles in contemporary life. The talk will be richly illustrated with exquisite scale drawings, photographs and rare maps from the book, which describe and celebrate the public buildings, rooms and spaces of central Sydney. 1pm – 2pm Shaping Public Sydney – Chair: Dr Caroline Butler-Bowdon Sydney is a city of phenomenal change. Since its beginnings as a colonial outpost, Sydney has quickly grown to be a powerful contender on the global stage. Former Government Architect Peter Mould and City Historian Lisa Murray discuss the various factors that have influenced Sydney’s development – including how economics, power and the changing role of government have shaped our public values – with Dr Caroline Butler-Bowdon, HHT Assistant Director, Creative Services. 3pm – 4pm Designer Suburbs – Chair: Ian Innes In the 1950s, 60s and 70s architects such as Harry Seidler, Ken Woolley, Michael Dysart and Graeme Gunn took high-end design to the suburbs. Backed by Pettit & Sevitt, Merchant Builders and other project builders, architects created small, simple houses that transformed the look of suburbia. Today, the distance between architects and the suburbs has never been greater, with Australia’s super-sized, energy-guzzling project homes the world’s biggest. What can we learn from the designer homes of the postwar years?
